Rural life

Ru (irrigation channels), water-mills, rascards (rural houses), bread ovens traditionally found in Central Valle d'Aosta

The central part of the region affords an abundance of spots telling the story of bygone rural life, these include its “ru” (old irrigation channels), water mills, rascard (rural houses) and traditional bread ovens. While strolling along the meandering pathways through the woodlands you will come across artificial channels that convey water from the mountains towards the fields; further down in Saint-Marcel you’ll find not only the water mills of Seissogne and Valmeanaz but also the bread-ovens where traditional wholemeal bread was once baked. In Fénis there are several rascards, traditional dwellings where the farmers both lived and stored their cereal crops. This cross-section of Valdostan rural life as it once was must be preserved from the erosion of time, and appreciated while visiting Central Valle d’Aosta.
